Car Accident Attorneys and Spring Driver Safety

Many drivers make the mistake of thinking that road conditions automatically improve in the springtime. However, despite the sunshine and warmer weather, this time of year introduces new road safety hazards. Spring driving accidents are the result of wet road surfaces, and other factors unique to this unpredictable season.

Over the years, our car accident attorneys have seen the tragic fatalities and injuries caused by spring weather.

“Many drivers underestimate road conditions in the springtime, which can lead to tragic consequences,” Scott Mann says, car accident attorney. “There is an increase of severe inclement weather in the spring. There are more rain showers, thunderstorms, hail, and flooding. More water on the ground usually results in slippery road surfaces, which can lead to more auto accidents.”

Between 2002 and 2012, 46 percent of all weather-related auto accidents were caused by rainfall (Federal Highway Administration). Torrential rain and flooding causes slippery road surfaces, which can greatly affect your ability to safely operate a vehicle. Due to its affect on tire traction, water on the road makes stopping difficult and increases the risk of hydroplaning.

After the winter season ends, roads are in worse shape than at any other time of the year. Potholes and cracks appear in the spring due to damage caused by snow plows, sand, salt, and ice. There are also more animals, bicycles, runners, and pedestrians on the road because of the warmer weather. Drivers need to keep a lookout for deer and cyclists to avoid collisions. This is especially important at dusk and dawn when visibility is low.

“Motorists during the springtime need to take precautions to better ensure their safety,” says Mike Wyatt, car accident attorney. “Make sure your headlights and wiper blades are working properly to increase visibility. Your tire pressure will also be low due to the cold winter temperatures, so make sure your tires are safely inflated. When it’s raining, decrease your speed so you can stop on time and avoid collisions.”
