Returning to your car to find that someone hit it while you were inside is never fun. But often it’s even worse when you’re the one doing the damage. Busy parking lots and crowded city streets are the perfect setup for accidents like this. With all the noise and commotion, it’s often difficult to concentrate solely on driving. Being prepared is your best bet to getting back on the road as quickly as possible. [videosingle id="20532" width="100%" height="400" rel="false" /]
If you hit them
We’ve all been there. You get a little too close or you’re distracted by traffic and next thing you know you’re out of your car hoping it sounded worse than it looks. If the owner of the car is present, treat it like any other accident. If they aren’t and you’re unable to find them, it’s best to:- Leave a legible note under the wiper blade. Include your name, address, phone number, license plate number, the vehicle identification number of the car you’re driving, and a brief explanation of the accident.
- Write down information about the vehicle you hit: make, model and license plate number. Note any special circumstances that contributed to the accident (slippery roads, no light, vehicle sticking out).
- Notify local or state police.
- Notify your auto insurance company.
